Christian Ress - Biography
Tradition meets innovation: how a wine entrepreneur is reinventing the industry
Standing still is not an option – especially in a world that is constantly changing. Christian Ress shows how to preserve tradition while boldly breaking new ground. As owner of the long-established Balthasar Ress winery and founder of the international wineBANK, he combines centuries-old craftsmanship with an innovative, digital mindset – proving that the two are not opposites but a recipe for success.
From heritage to engine of innovation
The Balthasar Ress winery looks back on 155 years of history. As the fifth generation at the helm, Christian Ress faces a core challenge: how do you protect a valuable heritage while creating something new? For him, tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the passing on of fire.
Under his leadership, the winery has evolved from a regional producer into an international business, present in more than 40 countries. Alongside expanding the family estate, he has founded additional ventures in the wine sector. In total, his companies now employ around 100 people.
Unconventional ideas that move the industry
- Underwater wine “Resspekt”: A prize-winning Riesling cuvée matured at a depth of 18 metres in the Diez gravel lake, with a uniquely distinctive flavour profile.
- Germany’s northernmost vineyard on Sylt: A bold experiment that pushed boundaries and drew nationwide attention.
- wineBANK – community since 2009: An exclusive club for wine lovers, now in four countries with 15 locations and around 3,000 members – a blueprint for creating a thriving community around wine.
